COLUMBUS, OH – Rickenbacker International Airport (LCK) has been selected as a research site for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to explore new technologies to detect and mitigate potential safety risks posed by drones.

Rickenbacker is one of five airports that will play an active role in the research through the agency’s Airport Unmanned Aircraft Systems Detection and Mitigation Research Program.

“As a strong proponent of advancing innovation and technology, the Columbus Regional Airport Authority is thrilled to take part in this significant research that will create standards and guidance for airports across the country,” said Joseph R. Nardone, President & CEO of CRAA.

The airport authority applied to participate in the program in October 2020, emphasizing how the airport meets and exceeds the selection criteria. Rickenbacker was selected based on its unique environment and conditions conducive to support testing.

The airport will host a team of researchers who will test and evaluate several new technologies and systems to address possible airspace interference from drones, making airports safer for passengers and manned aircraft.

Testing will begin this year and continue through 2023. No disruptions to airport operations are anticipated during the testing.
