Avoid Housing Scams — Ask Layden!

Columbus Chamber
The Columbus Chamber provides connections, resources and solutions that help small businesses and Fortune 500 enterprises grow Central Ohio's economy.

Do you know how to spot a scam when it comes to homebuying or renting?

You may think you do, but to be on the safe side listen to the latest edition of “Ask Layden!” featuring Homeport Senior Counselor Layden Hale.

“Rental and mortgage moratoriums are set to end in the next few weeks,” Hale says. And that could create a bigger stage for “scammers offering the message of hope and guaranteed solutions to the most vulnerable people in our community.”

In connection with NeighborWorks of America’s Stop Home Scams initiative, Hale’s June 2021 monthly videocast offers tips and contacts that could help you avoid being a victim.

Some highlights from the video:

  • Avoid promises of success or anyone who guarantees to prevent a foreclosure or eviction — because there are no guarantees.
  • Avoid companies that tell you to stop paying your rent or mortgage or make the payments to them.
  • Don’t pay any upfront costs or fees for a service that hasn’t been completed. You should not have to pay for this assistance, because there are plenty of non-profit HUD approved agencies that offer these services for free.

You can contact or send a question to Hale on this matter or others connected to homebuyer education and financial fitness. You can also visit www.Homeportlearning.org or call 614 545-4895. But first, watch the latest edition of Ask Layden!
