Tell us about your company’s mission and values
Sana’s mission is to make healthcare understandable, accessible, and affordable. We believe that so much of US healthcare’s problems stem from its lack of transparency, which has made it both difficult and expensive for patients to get the care they need while avoiding that which they do not.
Our values are:
1. Build the Future – Healthcare is broken. The only way we’re going to do anything better than the status quo is to throw away the status quo. We build what should be done, rather than following the way things have been done.
2. Be Clear – We communicate clearly with each other, our members, and our partners. We are upfront and authentic. We simplify complex statements and ideas so everyone can understand.
3. Empower Others – We support each other in an environment of teamwork in order to succeed. We support our members and give them the tools and information they need to make good decisions.
4. Align Incentives – We align the incentives and goals of our customers, members, partners, and providers. If we always look for a win-win, we naturally lose the negative incentive to do the wrong thing. We’ll always end up in a better place.

How do you stay engaged with trends that you see in your industry?
Our goal of driving transformation in healthcare is embedded in every part of our company, and we strive to stay abreast of news and trends in the industry. Having a fully remote and distributed workforce, including several employees in Ohio, helps us stay close to local innovations and trends across the US. Our company has an industry news channel in Slack, where anyone at Sana can post relevant articles and analysis, and discuss topics related to our partners, competitors, the health insurance landscape, states in which we operate, and more. Given that we operate in a highly regulated industry, we also monitor healthcare and insurance regulatory and policy development. Our product and marketing teams collaborate on industry research to continuously improve upon our messaging, positioning, and product development. We also regularly seek feedback from our members, employer customers, and health benefits professionals.
What is your company culture like?
Sana has been a remote-first company since its inception in 2017. We strive for our culture to allow everyone to thrive, and giving employees flexibility in their work environment is just one way we aim to do so. We have also been committed to our employees’ wellness since day one. We recently launched “Employee Resource Groups,” designed to celebrate groups such as veterans, LGBTQ+, Women, and Latinos, and topic-based groups focused around mental health and yoga, where employees across teams come together to learn from and listen to each other’s experiences. Our company grew more than 50% in 2021, and these groups have helped us maintain a strong, supportive culture despite our remote-first nature. We also encourage recognition at Sana – our employees give public “shoutouts” to each other through Slack to show their appreciation for something an employee has done that reinforces any of our core values.
What does it take to be a successful employee at your company?
Successful employees at Sana are mission-driven, innovative and empathetic toward our members, customers and each other. As we are a remote-first company it is also crucial for our employees to be self-motivated, and excellent communicators. With these critical skills, our employees are able to drive our goal of building a better healthcare experience forward, while simultaneously building a supportive and inclusive place to work.
What makes Columbus such a great place to do business?
Columbus has seen a boom in startups over the past few years. As the local tech community attracts more talent and investment to the area things are only going to get better. That, combined with the existing insurance industry makes it a great place for a company like Sana that sits at the intersection of the two.
